This is a nice little clip of Astroboy running and then blasting off, made by edmendo at YouTube. He created it with Maya and says that it was one of his favorite cartoons as a child.

Great job, edmendo!

Ruri 3D Anime Maya Animation

This is a very short, but terrific animation made by LeafMKII at YouTube, aka Kouken at deviantArt.

It was very hard for me to decide whether I should put this in the cel shaded category or the photorealistic category. This is really somewhere inbetween. He lists this as cel shaded on YouTube, but it is not what I would really call cel shading. This was made in Maya. He says it was his first attempt at modeling and animating in Maya, which I think is super impressive. Its an excellent example of 3D anime. The style is spot on and it is a very cute little short.

Congratulations, LeafMKII, you are one of the best examples I have found so far! I hope you can inspire more artists.

Ninja Gaiden - NES Intro Remake

This is a cel shaded 3D remake of the intro to Ninja Gaiden on the original Nintendo Entertainment System by Henrique Lundeqvist, aka henriqvist on YouTube.

This is a remarkable reproduction of a memorable bit of game animation. In fact, it is much cooler than the original, if you ask me. The 3D is not over emphasized, but rather it lends just enough added dimension such that you know it is there. The cell shading is beautiful technically and also due to the tastefully selected color palette.

Compare it against the original below:

Henrique has many interesting videos on his YouTube channel, so please check him out and give him some support.

Manga Wars

This is an amateur parody of both Star Wars and anime, created by Hyun Supul, aka arkadyrenko02 on YouTube.

Judging from the comments, I would say its one of those videos you either love or hate, but either way, it is definitely an example of a complete cel shaded 3D anime short. There is a lot to be said for its status as a complete short. By far most examples of amateur animation is just a short clip that someone made as an experiment, but this is a complete story, and I think its pretty funny too. The cell shading looks pretty good as well, and I guess that should not be a surprise, since it seems that it was made with 3D Studio Max, professional software.

Congratulations, Huyn, your short deserves its place in my Featured Cel Shaded Anime.
